class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>LPWAN cellular networks<\/strong> consist of three technologies distinct connectivity solutions dedicated to the IoT. They differ from other LPWAN ecosystems (Lora, Sigfox &#8230;) in that they rely on the existing antenna network (2G, 3G, 4G, 5G).<\/p><p>The set of <strong>these standards coexist <\/strong> to date because they apply to relatively different use cases.<\/p><p>However, they serve the same purpose: a cellular connection for battery-powered terminals. This is possible through two features with which they are all equipped:<\/p><ul><li>The Power Saving Mode (PSM)<\/li><li>The <strong>Extended Discontinuous Reception<\/strong> (eDRX)<\/li><\/ul><p>These two technologies allow connected objects to be put on standby rather than maintaining a continuous connection.<\/p><p>In this article we will first define each of these standards by highlighting the differences between these three systems: <strong>LTE-M<\/strong> vs <strong>Nb-IoT<\/strong> vs <strong>Ec-GSM-IoT<\/strong>.<\/p><h2><strong>LTE-M<\/strong><\/h2><p>It is the protocol with the highest uplink data rate of the three technologies (1 Mbit\/s vs. 63 kbit\/s for NB-Iot and 474 Kbit\/s for EC-GSM-IoT).<\/p><p>It also offers the lowest latency. As an extension of the 4G antenna network, it allows terminals to operate in France and abroad.<\/p><p>Among the significant strengths of LTE-M :<\/p><ul><li>The\u00a0<strong>handover<\/strong>\u00a0(the connection is maintained without interruptions between the antennas, essential for mobile terminals such as vehicle tracking)<\/li><li><strong>Voice and SMS transmission<\/strong>, critical features for life safety applications (construction sites, mining operations, elevator emergency calls)<\/li><li><strong>Extended Coverage<\/strong>\u00a0(EC) which aims to improve the reception of buried or indoor objects (behind thick concrete walls, parking lots, elevators)<\/li><\/ul><p>LTE-M is needed for all applications where\u00a0<strong>latency or flow are critical<\/strong>\u00a0: Animal tracking, vehicle tracking, medical devices, smoke or gas detectors, industry 4.0. \u201c<strong>5G ready<\/strong>\u201d, it allows you to equip your park with connected objects without having to fear rapid obsolescence.<\/p><p>One of the limitations of LTE-M could be its power consumption under harsh transmission conditions.<\/p><p>If it is less greedy than NB-IoT in good conditions, it is the opposite in \u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #fe753e;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kn.e-technik.tu-dortmund.de\/.cni-bibliography\/cnidoc\/J%C3%B6rke2018power.pdf\">extreme conditions<\/a><\/span><\/b>. Also be careful that LTE-M is available in your country, it is not the case, so far,\u00a0<b><span style=\"color: #fe753e;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gsma.com\/iot\/deployment-map\/\">in part of Eastern Europe, China or India<\/a><\/span><\/b>.<\/p><h2><strong>Nb-IoT<\/strong><\/h2><p>It could be considered as a solution halfway between the <strong>LPWAN<\/strong> (Sigfox, Lora) and the <strong>LTE-M<\/strong>. With a much higher latency than LTE-M (several seconds versus 10 ms), NB-IoT does not allow for real-time monitoring.<\/p><p>It was designed for\u00a0<strong>fixed sensors<\/strong>\u00a0: agricultural sensors, meters, lighting, smart home.<\/p><p>In all these uses, the\u00a0<strong>flows are limited<\/strong>\u00a0and the terminals are not intended to be moved permanently, unlike a vehicle for example.<\/p><p>Among the strengths of the <strong>NB-IoT<\/strong> :<\/p><ul><li style=\"list-style-type: none;\"><ul><li>Is the <strong>least expensive\/strong&gt; of the three technologies. In fact, The NB-IoT\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.iotforall.com\/cellular-iot-explained-nb-iot-vs-lte-m\"><strong>does not require a gateway<\/strong><\/a>, eliminating a hardware layer in your installation.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li><strong>As we have seen above, it is the standard\u00a0<\/strong><strong>least greedy<\/strong>\u00a0in electricity when a continuous transmission is required.<\/li><li><strong>It is available in<\/strong><strong>most countries of the world<\/strong> (with a few exceptions like Mexico).<\/li><\/ul><p>The <strong>NB-IoT<\/strong> carries only the <strong>data<\/strong>, neither voice nor SMS. It does not support handover or roaming. It is therefore not a technology suitable for mobile terminals.<\/p><p>On the other hand, it is also \u201c<strong>5G ready<\/strong>\u201d and has been designed to cope with the increasing<strong> <\/strong><strong>exponential<\/strong> of fixed sensors (smart city, agriculture, industry &#8230;) in the coming years.<\/p><h2><strong>EC-GSM-IoT<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>Less known than the two previous technologies, the EC-GSM-IoT is deployable on the\u00a0<\/strong><strong>existing GSM network<\/strong>\u00a0(<strong>2G<\/strong>\/<strong>3G<\/strong>\/<strong>4G<\/strong>) with a simple software update. The GSM network is the only network to cover 90% of the planet, including in remote areas, at sea or in conflict zones.<\/p><p>It is therefore mainly used in<strong>\u00a0developing countries<\/strong>\u00a0where the telecommunication infrastructures are still under-equipped (Africa, Middle East, South-East Asia) or in some areas poorly equipped with 4G, Lora or Sigfox antennas, i.e., without alternatives.<\/p><p>Latency<strong>s side <\/strong>, it is located between the<strong>LTE-M<\/strong> and the\u00a0<strong>NB-IoT,<\/strong> with figures around one second (700ms, 2 seconds). It also presents intermediate rates between <strong>474 Kbit\/s<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>2 Mbit\/s<\/strong>.<\/p><p>The <strong>EC-GSM-IoT<\/strong> allows, contrary to NB-IoT, to transport<strong> SMS<\/strong>, but not voice calls.<\/p><p>Note that it offers a number of <strong>security<\/strong>, problems on the network <strong>2G<\/strong>, lowering the risks at the network level <strong>3G<\/strong> or <strong>4G<\/strong> existants.<\/p><p>The network <strong>EC-GSM-IoT<\/strong> is therefore an interesting <strong>connectivity<\/strong> when the 2G network still needs to be maintained for many years and the 4G network is insufficient.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50
